“Financial assistance” is not one program. Two of the most common routes are manufacturer copay support and independent charitable foundations, and they are not interchangeable.

Manufacturer copay programs

Manufacturer copay programs are generally designed around a manufacturer's own product and commonly have insurance-type restrictions. Federal fraud-and-abuse rules are one reason manufacturer coupons generally cannot be used to subsidize drugs paid for by federal health care programs such as Medicare.

Independent charitable foundations

Independent foundations may offer assistance by disease fund rather than by a single manufacturer's product. Depending on the foundation and open fund, assistance can include copays, coinsurance, deductibles, premiums, travel or other treatment-related expenses. Eligibility, covered diagnoses, insurance rules and available funding vary by program and can change quickly.

Manufacturer copay supportUsually product-specific

Best starting point for eligible commercially insured patients when the manufacturer offers a program.

Independent foundationUsually disease/fund-specific

Can be especially important when manufacturer copay support is unavailable or prohibited for the patient's coverage type.

Why MedicineCostHelp sends you to live status pages

Foundation funds can open, close, refill or move to waitlist status. A stale “OPEN” label is worse than no label. MedicineCostHelp therefore routes to the foundation's current program or live fund finder instead of guaranteeing availability.
